Kingston, the capital of Jamaica is known across the world for its beauty, luxurious hotels and it’s overall historic sites. However, like other famous cities in the world, it has a hidden side. The side that is riddled with poverty and violence.
Due to these factors, many children lose their parents before they are even old enough to form a solid memory of them. Some children who do have parents have to be removed and relocated to children homes, due to a number of factors. These children need love and self-motivation to better themselves, and to avoid falling into the same trap as their parents and end the cycle.
Help a child/children in need by joining our Jamaica orphanage volunteer abroad project in Kingston. Help steer a child in the direction of a fruitful future.
Still wondering if you should choose us for your Jamaica orphanage volunteer abroad experience? Here are a few reasons why we are the most ideal choice in Jamaica:
No qualifications or prior experience are required. However, you must be devoted as these children may require a lot of affection, attention, and care.
Following your application and acceptance into the project, your Project Advisor will contact you to discuss the activities you would like to engage in with the children. This is a great time for both of you to brainstorm and begin planning your project to ensure your trip is as impactful as possible. Some ideas you could think about include:
These are just some examples. Feel free to discuss any other activities you would like to engage in during your project.
On the first day of your project, a Program Advisor will accompany you to the children’s home, where you will be introduced to the staff and given a tour of the property. We will spend some time to ensure that you are settled in comfortably and that you know what you will be doing for the remainder of the day.
We will also make the necessary arrangements so that you know where you can purchase lunch.
On weekends, and some weekday afternoons, you can partake in our cultural immersion activities and excursions. This is the perfect opportunity for you to not only have fun and blow off steam but also learn about our rich culture and experience Jamaica’s top attractions. View our available cultural immersion tours and adventure packages and purchase a tour package to maximize your experience in Jamaica.
Upon the successful completion of your project, we will award you with a Volunteer Certificate, signed by our Managing Director. We would also be happy to sign any documents that you would need to prove community service hours.
Oftentimes the orphanages and childcare facilities will not have adequate resources for the children. It would be a big help if you are able to raise funds and do a collection drive back home so that you could bring these resources with you to Jamaica. We will send you a list of needed resources for the facility you are placed in, as well as those needed for the activities you have chosen.
You will stay with Jomo, the owner of Jamaica International Projects and his family. This option houses up to 10 people comfortably in dorm rooms equipped with air conditioning.
You will stay at this 3-star hotel while receiving our full support.
For groups, you will be able to choose from a wide list of guest houses or hotels in Kingston or St. Catherine to accommodate your members. You can choose from small guest houses to fancy business hotels, depending on your group’s budget. Of course, we can handle the booking of group accommodations for you if you desire.
Your Jamaica orphanage volunteer abroad project cost covers breakfast and dinner daily. You will be served Jamaican cuisine during your stay. If you have any special dietary needs we will make special preparations for you.
Each day of your orphanage volunteer abroad project we will give you a 30-minute training session on the different aspect of the Jamaican culture. We will cover food, history, traditions, religion, economy, government and more.
All volunteers joining this project will receive orientation and support documentation on your date of arrival. Once you are settled into your accommodation, you will be given your finalized itinerary and your orientation guide. During orientation, we will go over project dates and times, transportation, meal times, cultural/excursion activities and you will be given tips on Jamaica.
Your orphanage volunteer abroad project also includes lessons on how to speak, write and understand Patois (pronounced Pat-Wah), which is our local dialect. You will likely hear it spoken a lot by the children at the home.
We also provide daily mentorship sessions for teenagers or a general review of your day’s activities. You can feel free to discuss the challenges you faced that day, the activities you completed with the children, your plans for the following day and ask any questions you may have. This is roughly 30 minutes daily.
We provide you with airport pickup at the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston (KIN). We will meet you at the airport with a sign saying Jamaica International Projects. You will be transferred directly from the airport to your accommodation.
Each day, you will be transferred from your accommodation directly to your project by a team member. We will also pick you up at your project at the agreed upon time and transfer you either back to the accommodation, to change money/purchase supplies or to a cultural immersion activity/excursion, depending upon your itinerary.
For your tours, you will have a Project Advisor accompanying you to point out important landmarks and to function as a guide. You will be transferred to and from all excursions and outings.
At the end of your orphanage volunteer abroad project, we will provide return transportation to the airport, bus stop or another drop off point within Kingston or St. Catherine of your choosing.

This was my first volunteering trip abroad that I have planned out on my own, so without a school or supervisor doing it for me. I am very pleased with the overall experience, could not have been happier about it!
The people behind it were so helpful, generous, and welcoming, I would definitely work with Jamaica International Projects again! Even when sudden issues would arise, (i.e. accommodation changes and minor problems), they were dealt with as soon as possible and in the best manner. The volunteering itself was greatly enjoyable and taught me a lot on a social, humanitarian and even personal level.
Overall very impressive service provided by such a small organization, leaving me with the most positive feeling about it.
WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE. This was a life changing experience. The children were so great. They gave me and taught me so much more than I gave them. This was one of the most satisfying trips I’ve ever done. Jomo, his mother and Dwayne were great hosts and caretakers. Jamaica and its people will forever be in my heart.
Unforgettable experience! All of you should try it. It was only my first-time volunteering and I’d love to do it again through the same Jamaica International Projects.
