Overview

Kingston, the capital of Jamaica is known across the world for its beauty, luxurious hotels and it’s overall historic sites. However, like other famous cities in the world, it has a hidden side. The side that is riddled with poverty and violence.

Due to these factors, many children lose their parents before they are even old enough to form a solid memory of them. Some children who do have parents have to be removed and relocated to children homes, due to a number of factors. These children need love and self-motivation to better themselves, and to avoid falling into the same trap as their parents and end the cycle.

Help a child/children in need by joining our Jamaica orphanage volunteer abroad project in Kingston. Help steer a child in the direction of a fruitful future.

Planning Your Project Activities

Following your application and acceptance into the project, your Project Advisor will contact you to discuss the activities you would like to engage in with the children. This is a great time for both of you to brainstorm and begin planning your project to ensure your trip is as impactful as possible. Some ideas you could think about include:

  • Helping children with homework after school
  • Caring for babies and small children (not all homes house babies)
  • Helping house mothers in the kitchen to prepare meals
  • Teaching the children reading and writing exercises
  • Organizing Arts and Crafts sessions
  • Playing games and telling stories
  • Sharing your culture and experiences
  • Organizing mini fashion shows or other fun activities
  • Setting up sports activities/exercises, matches, tournaments and more
  • Painting areas of the home, assist with yard work, repair broken furniture and help with cleaning
  • Mentoring the children in 1 on 1 or group sessions to help them overcome individual issues
  • Planning special activities based on your career, skills, and talents
  • Sponsoring and mentoring a child that needs assistance
  • After you depart you can decide to sponsor a child to keep in contact and offer assistance

These are just some examples. Feel free to discuss any other activities you would like to engage in during your project.

Your First Day

On the first day of your project, a Program Advisor will accompany you to the children’s home, where you will be introduced to the staff and given a tour of the property. We will spend some time to ensure that you are settled in comfortably and that you know what you will be doing for the remainder of the day.

We will also make the necessary arrangements so that you know where you can purchase lunch.

Afternoon And Weekends

On weekends, and some weekday afternoons, you can partake in our cultural immersion activities and excursions. This is the perfect opportunity for you to not only have fun and blow off steam but also learn about our rich culture and experience Jamaica’s top attractions. View our available cultural immersion tours and adventure packages and purchase a tour package to maximize your experience in Jamaica.

Project Completion

Upon the successful completion of your project, we will award you with a Volunteer Certificate, signed by our Managing Director. We would also be happy to sign any documents that you would need to prove community service hours.

Resources For Orphanage Volunteer Abroad

Oftentimes the orphanages and childcare facilities will not have adequate resources for the children. It would be a big help if you are able to raise funds and do a collection drive back home so that you could bring these resources with you to Jamaica. We will send you a list of needed resources for the facility you are placed in, as well as those needed for the activities you have chosen.

Recommended To Take With You

  • Money to purchase lunch ($3 – $5 USD per day)
  • Insect repellent to prevent mosquito and bug bites
  • Supplies to assist with your project
  • A camera to take pictures
  • Sunscreen if you intend to play in the sun or sunbathe
  • A reusable water bottle
  • Comfortable shoes
  • Notebook or electronic device to take notes
  • Cash for any shopping or excursions
  •  Water shoes if you plan on swimming

We also provide daily mentorship sessions for teenagers or a general review of your day’s activities. You can feel free to discuss the challenges you faced that day, the activities you completed with the children, your plans for the following day and ask any questions you may have. Reviews

  • This was my first volunteering trip abroad that I have planned out on my own, so without a school or supervisor doing it for me. I am very pleased with the overall experience, could not have been happier about it!

The people behind it were so helpful, generous, and welcoming, I would definitely work with Jamaica International Projects again! Even when sudden issues would arise, (i.e. accommodation changes and minor problems), they were dealt with as soon as possible and in the best manner. The volunteering itself was greatly enjoyable and taught me a lot on a social, humanitarian and even personal level.

Overall very impressive service provided by such a small organization, leaving me with the most positive feeling about it.

  • WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE. This was a life changing experience. The children were so great. They gave me and taught me so much more than I gave them. This was one of the most satisfying trips I’ve ever done. Jomo, his mother and Dwayne were great hosts and caretakers. Jamaica and its people will forever be in my heart.

  • Unforgettable experience! All of you should try it. It was only my first-time volunteering and I’d love to do it again through the same Jamaica International Projects.
