Overview

So you find yourself in Jamaica and are thinking to join a volunteer orphanage Jamaica experience for a day. You are definitely in the right place, as we would love to help you arrange an impactful day of volunteering with children.

Escape your hotel or guest house for the day and let our expert Project Advisors guide you to a unique experience that only a select few enjoy in their lives. Jamaica has two faces – the much more famous side known for stunning beaches, soothing reggae music, breathtaking landmarks, and our warm climate, among other things. The lesser-known side consists of many Jamaicans living in less than ideal circumstances, with the cost of living being at an all-time high. As a result, many families are either unwilling or unable to properly care for their own children, who are then forced to live in children homes or ‘orphanages’. And just like Jamaica as a country, the children homes in Jamaica are home to a multitude of minors of varying ages and backgrounds.

Not only do they house kids whose families can’t care for them, but they also accommodate those that are orphaned, as well as children who suffer from behavioral issues. By joining this volunteer orphanage Jamaica project you probably won’t solve all the problems of the children, but you will definitely spend a day meaningfully while you get an insight into the Jamaican culture and make some new friends along the way.

You can volunteer in Kingston or Montego Bay.

Details

What To Expect

Your volunteer orphanage Jamaica Project Advisor either meet you at the orphanage you will be volunteering, or contact you by phone/WhatsApp to ensure you fully settle in. We offer the option to provide you with accommodation at an additional charge if you desire. On our volunteer in Jamaica orphanage project you can be placed in Kingston or Montego Bay.

When you arrive at the children home, you will be introduced to the local staff, shown around the property and introduced to the children. Once you are settled in you can begin your volunteer abroad in orphanage tasks, until lunchtime when you can take a break and enjoy a meal. You can take along your own lunch, or arrange with your driver to be transferred to a restaurant or food store nearby. After lunch, you will continue volunteering until you complete your tasks for the day.

At the end of the day, you can hand off any supplies and donations you brought with you and say goodbye to the children and the staff. We will then provide you with your volunteer certificate for successfully completing your volunteer project.

Feel free to learn more about us and what we stand for. Read about us, check out our reviews, download our volunteer brochure, or read through our FAQ.

Step 3: Connect with a Project Advisor

Admissions & Getting Started

Step 1: Apply

Complete the application form. By applying you won’t be making a commitment or locking yourself into the project, so you are free to explore other options and compare our projects with other volunteer organizations. Instead, your application will help us better advise you, plan your itinerary and customize a project for you. We review and respond to applications within 48 hours.

Step 2: Meet us

Schedule a virtual meeting with us. If you are under 18, you are required to have a parent or guardian present. Meetings are done on Zoom, Google Meets, or via phone call.

Step 3: Review the 1 day volunteer project enrollment fee

Review the offer email, which includes the cost, sample itinerary, what is included, and what you need to submit.

Pre-Arrival Prep & Getting Ready To Go

This includes an official welcome, tips and guides, and virtual orientation. You will get access to our language, culture, and our travel safety and security course online that you can complete at your own pace (if you purchased the plan with these included).

Step 2: Ensure you are travel ready

Check your passport to ensure it will not expire during your trip, research if you need a visa to stay in your host country, obtain a travel medical insurance plan that covers you during your 1 day volunteer experience, and book your flights.

Step 3: Finalize your enrollment

Confirm that your fee is paid, and submit all required documents.

F.A.Q.

Who can volunteer for 1 day in Jamaica?

There is no restriction on the nationalities that can participate in our 1 day volunteer opportunities.

Yes! Read our reviews to see what our past volunteers and interns have to say about us, and during the enrollment process, you can request to connect with a past volunteer/intern.

You must be 16 years old or older to enroll on your own. If you are younger than 16, you will have to enroll with a parent or guardian. For a full list of requirements check out this list. Jamaica is an English-speaking country, so you should be able to read, write and speak English (you don’t need to be fluent).

No experience or qualifications are required, just a willingness to do a great job and have lots of fun. We encourage you to share any dietary needs or any special accommodations needed for your participation. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions about choosing the right program for you.

Beyond the program tuition and enrollment fee, consider these additional costs to ensure a smooth and worry-free financial experience:

  • Travel: This includes flights and any in-country transportation needs you might incur back in your home country.
  • Project Transfer: You should budget for round trip transportation between your accommodation and volunteer site.
  • Extra Adventures: Factor in costs for optional tours, excursions, and additional meals if desired.
  • Essentials: Remember travel medical insurance is required. You may also have to pay a visa fee to visit Jamaica depending on your nationality. We recommend budgeting for gratuities as well.

We accept payments by credit or debit card with our secure payment gateway.

Absolutely! Everything is better with friends. You can join with a parent, friend, sibling, or spouse and share a room (based on availability).

Yes! We take your safety and security seriously. Some steps we take to keep you safe during your trip include:

  • Vetted project sites
  • A detailed course on safety in Jamaica
  • Professional and licensed drivers take you to and from projects and destinations daily (if transfer is booked with us)
  • All employees do background checks

Unforgettable experience! All of you should try it. It was only my first-time volunteering and I’d love to do it again through the same Jamaica International Projects.
