There are animal volunteer programs in many countries, but Jamaica offers something the others do not — a combination of genuine need, extraordinary natural beauty, warm local culture, and a small team that actually knows you by name. Here is why this program stands out:
For 1-day or placement-only animal volunteer abroad projects, we can place you at veterinary clinics, animal shelters, and community organisations in Montego Bay, Falmouth, Kingston, and St. Catherine. Full project placements are available in Kingston and St. Catherine only.
This project welcomes anyone with a genuine love for animals — from working veterinarians seeking international clinical exposure to teenagers who simply want to spend their school holiday doing something that matters. No experience is required for basic placements. Advanced clinical roles require appropriate qualifications. Up to 40 volunteer hours per week, with certificates of completion provided.
For general placements — shelter care, feeding, cleaning, community education, and basic animal handling — no qualifications or prior experience are needed at all. A love of animals and a reliable work ethic are enough. For advanced clinical placements involving surgical assistance, diagnostics, lab work, or specialist procedures, you will need to be a qualified veterinarian or veterinary professional with appropriate experience. Please indicate your background clearly in your application so we can match you to the right placement from the start.
We offer two distinct tracks depending on your background and goals:
General Animal Care
No qualifications required. Open to anyone 16 and over who loves animals and wants to make a hands-on difference in Jamaica’s shelters and communities.
Clinical & Veterinary
For qualified veterinarians, vet nurses, vet students, and trained animal health professionals. Advanced procedures require proof of qualifications.
The minimum age to enroll independently is 16 years old. Volunteers under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Once your application is accepted, you will need to submit the following documents before your project begins:
No two animal volunteer projects look exactly alike, and we prefer it that way. Once you are accepted, your Project Advisor will schedule a planning session to discuss your background, goals, and the specific activities you want to take on. The more thought you put in before you arrive, the more impactful your time will be. We will help you build a day-by-day framework so you arrive knowing exactly what you are here to do.
These are starting points. We encourage you to bring your own ideas — especially if you have specialist experience you want to put to use.
Your Project Advisor will take you to your volunteer site on day one and introduce you to the team. You will tour the facility, understand the daily schedule, meet the animals in your care, and receive a full safety and operational briefing before your first hands-on session begins. It is a settling-in day as much as a working one — and by the end of it, you will feel at home.
When your sessions are done for the day, Jamaica opens up. Our partner tour and adventure company runs experiences across the island — river tubing, waterfall hikes, beach days, rum distillery tours, and much more. Animal lovers in particular often enjoy visiting Jamaica’s nature reserves and wildlife sanctuaries on their days off. Your host family will have plenty of local recommendations too.
You will receive an official Volunteer Certificate signed by our Managing Director documenting your project and hours. For veterinary professionals or students who need formal documentation of clinical hours or specific procedures completed, we work with your placement site to provide the most detailed record possible.
Donations of unused or surplus pet supplies from home can make an enormous difference to under-resourced Jamaican shelters. Items like pet carriers, leashes, collars, toys, and grooming tools are always welcomed. We will send you a specific needs list for your placement site after acceptance so you can prepare before you leave.

About a month before your start date, we hold a 30-minute onboarding session on Zoom or Google Meet. You will receive a formal welcome, a virtual orientation of Jamaica and your placement site, practical tips for your stay, and access to our online culture, language, and travel safety courses to complete before departure.
Confirm your passport is valid for the full duration of your trip. Check visa requirements for Jamaica based on your nationality. Purchase a travel medical insurance plan that covers your volunteer program dates. Book your flights into Montego Bay or Kingston.
Confirm all fees are settled and all documents submitted. Gather any pet supply donations you plan to bring along. Then pack your bags — Jamaica’s animals are waiting for you.
Not for general placements. Feeding, cleaning, exercising, grooming, and basic animal care are open to anyone with a love of animals and no formal training. For clinical work — surgeries, diagnostics, lab assistance, and specialist procedures — you will need to be a qualified veterinary professional. Please state your background clearly in your application so we can match you correctly.
The majority of placements involve domestic animals — dogs and cats in shelter environments and at veterinary clinics. Depending on your qualifications and interests, you may also have the opportunity to work with exotic animals at a local zoo alongside trained zookeepers.
Yes, and we actively encourage it. Pet carriers, leashes, collars, grooming tools, toys, and unused medications are all useful to local shelters and clinics. After acceptance, we will send you a specific needs list from your placement site so you can bring targeted donations rather than guessing.
There may be. Some volunteers have adopted or facilitated the rehoming of Jamaican animals during or after their projects. This depends on your country’s import regulations, airline policies, and the individual animal’s health status. We can help you explore this during your project, but it is not something we can guarantee in advance.
You will typically arrive in the morning and spend three to five hours on a mix of feeding, cleaning, animal handling, exercise, and basic care. Afternoons are usually yours. Your Project Advisor will help you structure your days during the planning session before you arrive.
Clinical placements are tailored to your qualifications. You might assist with physical examinations, support surgical procedures, run lab tests, or work on community vaccination and microchipping programs. Your daily activities are agreed with the veterinary team at your site before you arrive, so there are no surprises.
