Jamaica’s sporting reputation is real — its track and field program has produced some of the fastest sprinters in history, and football, cricket, and netball all have deep, organized followings. What doesn’t always make the highlight reel is how unevenly resourced organized sport and physical education actually are at the community level. Many schools and community centers lack the coaching staff, equipment, and structured programming to give kids consistent access to the sports culture the island is famous for.
Our sports coaching volunteer abroad program puts you directly into that gap. You go out into local schools and community centers to coach teams, run physical education classes, and organize sports days — contributing real coaching time and mentorship to kids who would otherwise have far less access to structured sport.
For 1-day or placement-only projects, placements are available at schools, community centers, and sports clubs in Montego Bay, Falmouth, Kingston, and St. Catherine. Full project placements are offered in Kingston and St. Catherine only.
This program is designed for coaches, athletes, sports science and physical education students, and anyone with a genuine passion for sport who wants to share it with kids who have less access to organized coaching. No formal qualification is required for general coaching support — advanced placements such as sports psychology or specialized training do require relevant credentials.

The minimum age to enroll independently is 16 years old. Participants under 18 must have a parent or guardian involved in their enrollment. You do not need prior coaching experience for general placements; advanced placements such as sports psychology require relevant qualifications, confirmed during your application. A youth sports volunteer abroad fills a real gap: organized sport teaches teamwork, discipline, and confidence at exactly the age those lessons matter most, but many community programs lack the consistent coaching staff to deliver it. Your time directly extends what a local school or club can offer its kids.
A physical education volunteer abroad typically spends time inside the regular school day, running PE classes alongside or in place of an existing teacher, rather than only working with an after-school team. This track suits volunteers more interested in general youth fitness than competitive team coaching specifically.

Your Project Advisor accompanies you to your volunteer site on day one. You will get a tour of the property, meet your team members, receive a brief project orientation, and learn where to get lunch.
On afternoons and weekends without planned volunteer work, our partner tour company offers excursions across the island, including museums and visits to indigenous communities, to round out your experience.
You receive an official Volunteer Certificate signed by our Managing Director confirming your placement, your project, and your hours. If you have documents that verify your volunteer or service hours, we are happy to sign those as well.
We strongly encourage volunteers to fundraise back home for resources to donate to their project — sports equipment, uniforms, and other supplies are usually in short supply at host sites. We will send you a list of needed resources for your specific placement once confirmed.

Our primary accommodation is Barnett’s Homestay, located in the quiet community of Portmore, St. Catherine. You will stay with Jomo Barnett, the Director of Jamaica International Projects, and his family during your project. This is your chance to live with a Jamaican family and learn our culture.

Within a month of your start date, we host a 30-minute onboarding call covering an official welcome, tips, and virtual orientation, plus access to our Patois, Jamaican culture, and travel safety courses online.
Check your passport’s expiry, research visa requirements, obtain travel medical insurance, and book your flights into Kingston.
Confirm all fees are paid and documents submitted. Pack your gear and get ready to coach.
Anyone with a genuine passion for sport and a willingness to work with kids and teens. Coaches and certified sports professionals can access more advanced placements, but general coaching and PE support roles require no formal qualification. There is no restriction on the nationalities that can participate in our international sports volunteer opportunity in Jamaica. Our only restriction is the age range of our participants, which is between 16 and 30 years old.

This depends on the time of year that you join, but you may meet other volunteers during your project. Keep in mind that other volunteers and interns may be enrolled in a different project than yours.

Jamaica is an English-speaking country, so you should be able to read, write and speak English (you don’t need to be fluent).
No experience or qualifications are required just a willingness to do a great job and have lots of fun.
