Our substance abuse volunteer abroad program places motivated volunteers directly inside this work. For 1-day or placement-only substance abuse volunteer projects, we can place you at rehabilitation centres, community organisations, and schools in Montego Bay, Falmouth, Kingston, and St. Catherine. Full project placements are offered in Kingston and St. Catherine only.
This project welcomes a wide range of volunteers — trained addiction counsellors, social workers, psychology or counselling students, public health professionals, or individuals who have been touched by addiction personally or through a family member. No formal qualification is required for community outreach and education roles. Clinical and therapeutic work requires appropriate credentials. Up to 40 volunteer hours per week, with certificates of completion provided.
Community outreach, drug awareness education, youth engagement, and general support roles are open to any motivated volunteer regardless of formal qualifications. Lived experience with addiction is genuinely valued in peer support contexts. For clinical roles involving individual or group counselling, patient assessment, or therapeutic work within rehabilitation centres, you should be a qualified addiction counsellor, social worker, psychologist, or healthcare professional. Because of the sensitive and sometimes complex nature of this work, thorough pre-planning is especially important. Before your arrival, your Project Advisor will hold a detailed planning session to discuss your background, your goals, and the specific organisations and communities where you will be placed.

Your Project Advisor accompanies you to your placement on day one. You will be introduced to the team, given a thorough briefing on the facility, the clients, and the programme you will be working within, and walked through all relevant confidentiality, safety, and safeguarding protocols. The first day is about orientation and trust-building.
This project can be emotionally demanding — proper rest and decompression matter. Our partner tour company offers weekend adventures across the island. Your host family is also a source of warmth, perspective, and evening conversation that many volunteers describe as one of the most valuable parts of their trip.
You receive an official Volunteer Certificate signed by our Managing Director confirming your project, your hours, and the nature of your contribution.
