Dental shadowing abroad means observing licensed dentists during real patient consultations, procedures, and treatment planning — asking questions, taking notes, and learning directly from professionals in real time. Depending on your training level, you may also assist with sterilizing instruments, preparing materials, recording patient information, and supporting oral health education sessions. Independent patient care, including any procedure performed without direct supervision, is not part of any track at any experience level.
The minimum age to enroll is 16 years old. Participants aged 16–17 are placed in shadowing-only roles with closer supervision and require parental involvement in enrollment. Participants 18 and older may be considered for more hands-on assisting roles depending on their training and the host clinic’s assessment. The terms are often used interchangeably across this industry, but our internship track is structured specifically around clinical learning objectives — a defined rotation, a documented skills log, and supervisor sign-off suited to academic credit or dental school applications. A dental volunteer abroad placement, by contrast, is built primarily around contribution to the host clinic’s outreach work. Many of our interns do both: structured clinical shadowing during the week, community outreach and oral health education on outreach days.
A dentistry internship abroad at the clinical shadowing level is open to any motivated applicant 16 or older with a genuine interest in the field — no dental coursework required. More advanced assisting roles, available to college students, dental students, and licensed professionals, do require proof of relevant enrollment or licensure, confirmed during your application.

Your Project Advisor accompanies you to your placement clinic for orientation, introducing you to your supervising dentist and walking through clinic protocols, safety procedures, and your specific role. The first few days typically involve observation before any assisting responsibilities begin, with the pace set by your supervisor based on your training and comfort level.
You receive an official Dental Internship Certificate signed by our Managing Director, a letter of recommendation from your supervising dentist, and a detailed log of your hours, rotations, and activities — formatted to support dental school applications, academic credit submissions, or your professional portfolio.
