Spend one to two weeks living inside Jamaican culture, not just visiting it, on our Jamaica cultural exchange — a guided program built around the island’s music, history, language, and community life. From the birthplace of reggae to a Maroon village still practicing centuries-old traditions, this is Jamaica understood from the inside.
Jamaica has shaped world culture far beyond its size — reggae music recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage, a Patois language with its own grammar and history, Maroon communities descended from those who won their freedom by force, and a Rastafarian movement that became a global spiritual and cultural force. Most visitors see a fraction of this from a resort pool. Our Jamaica cultural exchange is built to go further.
This is a fully guided, fully escorted Jamaica cultural exchange — not a checklist of photo stops. A dedicated local guide travels with your group every day, your accommodation, transportation, and entrance fees are arranged in advance, and your itinerary is built around the people and places that actually define Jamaican culture: reggae’s historic landmarks, a real Maroon community, a Rastafarian settlement, and the language and music traditions that rarely make it past a hotel lobby.
Most Jamaican culture experiences on offer are single half-day or full-day tours stitched together by a tour bus. Our program is structured as a genuine Jamaica cultural immersion — one to two full weeks living alongside a real Jamaican family at Barnett’s Homestay, with daily excursions, a consistent local guide, and enough time at each stop to actually absorb it rather than photograph it and move on.
Jamaica has plenty of cultural day tours. Very few are structured as a full, multi-day program with one consistent guide, one home base, and a thoughtfully sequenced itinerary. Here is what sets ours apart:
Your Jamaica cultural exchange begins with pickup from the airport in Kingston, with transfer to Barnett’s Homestay in Portmore, St. Catherine. From there, daily excursions reach across the island — Kingston, the Blue Mountains, the historic south coast, Jamaica’s lively north coast and beyond — with your guide and transportation handling every leg of the journey.
This program suits travelers of any age who want a genuine, hands-on introduction to Jamaican culture — families, friend groups, school and university groups, and corporate or community groups looking for a shared experience. No prior knowledge of Jamaican history or culture is required.
A genuine Jamaican cultural tour goes beyond landmark sightseeing — it includes real, living communities. That is why this itinerary includes a visit to an actual Maroon village and a Rastafarian settlement, alongside the reggae history sites most visitors already know. You leave having met the people who carry these traditions forward, not just read a plaque about them.
This is a sample. Tours, project days, and the overall trip duration can all be customized to your group’s interests.
We pick you up at the airport in Kingston and transfer you to your accommodation at Barnett’s Homestay. Settle in and enjoy your welcome dinner with your host family.
Start with a guided introduction to Jamaican culture and a hands-on Patois language class, then browse a local craft market for authentic Jamaican art and souvenirs.
Tour the Bob Marley Museum, the reggae legend’s former home, then visit Trench Town Culture Yard — the neighborhood where reggae itself was born.
Tour Devon House, the 19th-century mansion of Jamaica’s first Black millionaire, then explore the historic Half Way Tree district of Kingston.
Travel into the Blue and John Crow Mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, then visit a Maroon community to learn the history and customs of a people who won their freedom by force.
Visit a Rastafarian settlement for a guided lesson on Rastafari philosophy, herbs, and history, then close the day with a live reggae or traditional drumming performance.
Enjoy a final Jamaican breakfast with your host family before transfer back to the airport for your departure flight.
For travelers who want the fullest possible Jamaica heritage trip, we extend the program with a second week of additional cultural and historical excursions. Days 1 through 7 follow the itinerary above. Here is how the second week builds on it:
Visit Spanish Town, Jamaica’s former colonial capital, to see centuries of Spanish and British colonial history still standing in its architecture and town square.
Climb the famous terraced falls at Dunn’s River, then explore the cultural and historic sites of Ocho Rios.
Visit a basic school and community center to meet local students and families — a genuine, mutual cultural exchange rather than a one-way tour stop.
A hands-on workshop in traditional Jamaican drumming and dance forms, including Kumina and Dinki Mini, traditions that predate reggae and dancehall by generations.
Just minutes from Barnett’s Homestay, Hellshire is one of Jamaica’s most beloved fried fish and festival destinations — spend the day eating, relaxing, and seeing how Jamaicans actually spend a beach day.
A free day to revisit a favorite stop, relax at the homestay, or shop for final souvenirs — with optional add-ons available through your Trip Coordinator.
A final Jamaican breakfast with your host family, then transfer back to the airport for your departure flight.
A Jamaican culture and history tour at this depth suits travelers who want more than a beach vacation — history enthusiasts, music lovers, school and university groups, family groups looking for a shared adventure, and anyone who believes that understanding a place starts with understanding its people and their story. No prior background in Jamaican history or culture is required to enjoy any part of this itinerary.
Expect reggae and dancehall music history, Patois language immersion, real conversations with Maroon and Rastafarian community members, traditional drumming and dance, colonial and post-independence history, and the everyday rhythms of life with a Jamaican host family. This is culture experienced through people, not just exhibits.

Yes. The itinerary is family-friendly throughout, including the Maroon village and Rastafarian community visits, both of which are suitable for all ages.
Yes. Tours, project days, and trip duration can all be adjusted. If your group has specific cultural interests — more music, more history, more time with a single community — tell your Trip Coordinator and we will reshape the itinerary accordingly.
The Jamaican Food Tour centers on cuisine — rum, coffee, jerk, and seafood. This Jamaica cultural exchange centers on music, history, language, and community — reggae landmarks, a Maroon village, a Rastafarian settlement, and traditional drumming and dance. Many travelers combine elements of both; ask your Trip Coordinator about a blended itinerary.
Both. While the itinerary is designed to scale well for groups, solo travelers and couples are welcome. Group discounts apply for parties of 6 or more, but smaller groups and individuals are accommodated at the standard per-person rate.
You stay at Barnett’s Homestay in Portmore, St. Catherine — a real Jamaican family home offering air-conditioned rooms, hot showers, Wi-Fi, and the experience of living alongside a local family for the duration of your trip, rather than a standard hotel stay.
Flights, daily meals beyond what is specified in your itinerary, travel medical insurance, personal spending money, alcoholic beverages, and gratuities are all outside the base price. A full breakdown is included in your personalized quote.
