Jamaican Food Tour

Spend one to two weeks eating, cooking, and exploring your way across Jamaica on our Jamaican food tour — a guided culinary vacation built around the island’s rum, coffee, jerk, seafood, and farm-to-table traditions. From rum estate tastings to fishing village seafood feasts, this is Jamaica experienced through its food.

What Is Our Jamaican Food Tour?

Jamaica’s food culture is as layered as its history — jerk seasoning that traces back to the Maroons, curry traditions brought by Indian indentured laborers, ital cooking rooted in Rastafarian philosophy, rum distilling dating to the 1700s, and Blue Mountain coffee considered among the finest in the world. Most visitors taste a fraction of this in a single resort meal. Our Jamaican food tour is built to go deeper.

This is a fully guided, fully escorted Jamaican food tour — not a list of restaurant recommendations. A dedicated local guide travels with your group every day, your accommodation, transportation, and entrance fees are arranged in advance, and your itinerary is built around the island’s most respected culinary sites: rum estates, coffee plantations, seafood villages, working farms, and the kind of roadside food stops that never make it into a hotel concierge’s recommendations.

A Jamaica Food Vacation, Not Just a Day Trip

Most Jamaican food experiences on offer are single half-day or full-day tours. Our program is structured as a genuine Jamaica food vacation — one to two full weeks immersed in the island’s culinary landscape, with daily excursions, a consistent local guide, and the comfort of returning each evening to the same accommodation rather than living out of a suitcase.

Why Choose Our Jamaican Food Tour

Jamaica has plenty of food tours. Very few are structured as a full, multi-day program with one consistent guide, one home base, and a thoughtfully sequenced itinerary. Here is what sets ours apart:

  • One Guide, the Whole Trip: A dedicated local guide travels with your group every day — not a different driver and different commentary at every stop. That continuity means deeper context, better recommendations, and a guide who genuinely gets to know your group.
  • Built Around the Real Culinary Landmarks: Appleton Estate, Craighton Coffee, Devon House, Little Ochi — these are not arbitrary stops. They are the sites that define Jamaican food and drink culture, sequenced into a coherent week rather than a scattered list.
  • A Real Home Base: You stay at Barnett’s Homestay in Portmore — a real Jamaican family home — rather than shuttling between hotels. Coming home to a host family’s table after a day of touring adds a dimension that a resort simply cannot.
  • Customizable Itinerary: Tours, project days, and trip duration can all be adjusted to your group’s interests and schedule. The sample itineraries below are a starting point, not a fixed script.
  • Built for Groups: Whether you are traveling with family, friends, a culinary school cohort, or a corporate team, the itinerary scales to group size with consistent guiding and transportation throughout.
  • Genuine Cultural Depth: Cooking classes, language lessons, and optional visits to Rastafarian and Maroon communities mean this trip teaches you about Jamaica, not just what to eat in it.

What You Get on Our Jamaican Food Tour

  • Group airport pickup and return
  • Accommodation at Barnett’s Homestay, fully booked and arranged
  • Daily transportation to every scheduled excursion
  • Entrance fees for all listed activities included in your itinerary
  • A dedicated local guide who accompanies your group for the entire trip
  • 24-hour emergency support throughout your stay
  • Jamaican culture class and a Patois language class
  • A Jamaican cooking class led by a local instructor

Your Jamaican food tour begins with pickup from the airport in Kingston, with transfer to Barnett’s Homestay in Portmore, St. Catherine. From there, daily excursions reach across the island — the Blue Mountains, St. Elizabeth, Ocho Rios, and the south coast — with your guide and transportation handling every leg of the journey.

This tour suits travelers of any age who want a genuine, hands-on introduction to Jamaican food and culture — families, friend groups, food-focused travelers, culinary students, and corporate or community groups looking for a shared experience. Children are welcome on the full itinerary; please note that rum tastings at estates such as Appleton are restricted to guests 18 and older by the venues themselves, not by us.

What Makes This a Jamaican Culinary Tour, Not Just a Food Tour

A true Jamaican culinary tour goes beyond eating — it includes the production side of food and drink. That is why this itinerary includes a working rum distillery, a Blue Mountain coffee plantation, a working farm with a live cooking demonstration, and a grocery store visit where you shop for Jamaican ingredients alongside locals. You leave understanding not just what Jamaican food tastes like, but how and why it is made the way it is.

Sample 1-Week Itinerary

This is a sample. Tours, project days, and the overall trip duration can all be customized to your group’s interests.

Day 1: Arrive in Jamaica

We pick you up at the airport in Kingston and transfer you to your accommodation at Barnett’s Homestay. Settle in and enjoy your welcome dinner with your host family.

Day 2: An Intro to Jamaican Culture & Language + Jamaican Cooking Class

Day 5: Appleton Estate & Little Ochi Seafood

Tour Jamaica’s oldest rum distillery at Appleton Estate, complete with tastings, then head to the south coast for a fresh seafood feast at the legendary Little Ochi.

Day 7: Departure

Enjoy a final Jamaican breakfast with your host family before transfer back to the airport for your departure flight.

Just minutes from Barnett’s Homestay, Hellshire is one of Jamaica’s most famous fried fish and festival destinations. Spend the afternoon at Fort Clarence Beach afterward.

Day 9: Pickapeppa Sauce Factory Tour & Cassava Farm Visit

Tour the factory behind Jamaica’s most famous condiment, then visit a working cassava farm to see how bammy — a Jamaican staple — is made from root to plate.

Day 10: Rastafarian Village Tour & Ital Cooking Lesson

Visit a Rastafarian community for a guided lesson on herbs, spices, and Ital cooking philosophy, followed by a hands-on Ital meal preparation.

Day 11: Maroon Village Visit & Traditional Maroon Cuisine

No culinary background or cooking experience is required to enjoy any part of this itinerary.

Expect jerk chicken and pork, curry goat, ackee and saltfish, rice and peas, festival, fried fish, fresh tropical fruit, Blue Mountain coffee, Appleton rum, and farm-fresh produce straight from the source. Vegetarian, vegan, and other dietary requirements are accommodated with advance notice — just let us know during booking.

Our primary accommodation is Barnett’s Homestay, located in the quiet community of Portmore, St. Catherine. You will stay with Jomo Barnett, the Director of Jamaica International Projects, and his family during your project. This is your chance to live with a Jamaican family and learn our culture.

How Our Jamaican Food Tour Works

Here is the structure and support in place from arrival to departure:

  • Dedicated Local Guide: One guide travels with your group for the full duration of the trip, providing commentary, recommendations, and continuity that a rotating cast of drivers cannot match.
  • Comfortable Home Base: You stay at Barnett’s Homestay in Portmore rather than switching hotels, giving you a consistent, comfortable base and the experience of staying with a real Jamaican family.
  • Fully Arranged Logistics: Airport pickup and return, daily transportation, and every entrance fee for your scheduled activities are arranged before you arrive.
  • Customizable Itinerary: Tell us your group’s interests and we will adjust tours, project days, and trip duration accordingly.
  • 24-Hour Support: Our team is reachable throughout your trip for any questions, adjustments, or emergencies.
  • Inclusive Classes: A Jamaican cooking class and a Patois language class are built into every itinerary, regardless of trip length.

How To Book Your Jamaican Food Tour

Booking is straightforward. Our team responds to every inquiry within 48 hours, and most groups are confirmed and ready to travel within a few weeks of their first contact with us.

Research & Get the Facts

Step 1: Research

Read this page carefully. Decide whether the 1-week or 2-week itinerary fits your group, and note any optional services — a Rastafarian village visit, a Maroon village visit, daily meals — you want to add.

Step 2: Learn about us

Read about Jamaica International Projects, browse reviews from past travelers, and check our FAQ to understand how we operate.

Step 3: Confirm your group size and dates

Identify how many travelers are in your group and your preferred travel window. Larger groups may qualify for a discounted rate.

Step 4: Connect with a Trip Coordinator

Reach out to our team and we will pair you with a Trip Coordinator who will review your group’s interests, customize your itinerary, and walk you through booking from start to finish.

Booking & Getting Started

Step 1: Submit your inquiry

Tell us your group size, preferred dates, and any specific interests — jerk, rum, coffee, seafood, or all of the above. We respond within 48 hours.

Step 2: Meet us

Schedule a virtual meeting with your Trip Coordinator via Zoom, Google Meet, or phone to finalize your itinerary, optional add-ons, and trip duration.

Step 3: Review your quote

After your meeting, you receive a personalized quote with your total cost, your day-by-day itinerary, and everything that is included.

Step 4: Secure your booking

Pay your deposit to lock in your travel dates and confirm your accommodation and guide.

Step 5: Submit your documents

Provide the following ahead of travel:

  • Valid passport information for each traveler
  • Completed booking form
  • Dietary requirements or accessibility needs
  • Final payment, due ahead of your arrival date

Pre-Departure Prep

Step 1: Pre-departure call

About a month before travel, we hold a call to walk through your finalized itinerary, answer questions, and confirm any last-minute changes.

Step 2: Travel readiness

Confirm your passport is valid for your full trip, check visa requirements for your nationality, and book your flights into Kingston.

Step 3: Pack and go

Pack your bags, bring your appetite, and get ready for one of the most flavorful weeks of your life.

Yes. The itinerary is family-friendly throughout. The only restriction is on rum tastings at estates such as Appleton, which require guests to be 18 or older — a rule set by the venues themselves, not by us. Children can still tour the distillery and enjoy the rest of the visit.

Yes. Tours, project days, and trip duration can all be adjusted. If your group has specific culinary interests — more seafood, more rum, a deep dive into jerk — tell your Trip Coordinator and we will reshape the itinerary accordingly.

Both. While the itinerary is designed to scale well for groups, solo travelers and couples are welcome. Group discounts apply for parties of 6 or more, but smaller groups and individuals are accommodated at the standard per-person rate.

You stay at Barnett’s Homestay in Portmore, St. Catherine — a real Jamaican family home offering air-conditioned rooms, hot showers, Wi-Fi, and the experience of living alongside a local family for the duration of your trip, rather than a standard hotel stay.

Yes. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and other dietary requirements can be accommodated with advance notice. Let us know during booking so your itinerary and any included meals can be adjusted accordingly.

We strongly recommend it, and it is available as an optional add-on during booking. It is not automatically included in the base price.

Flights, daily meals beyond what is specified in your itinerary, travel medical insurance, personal spending money, alcoholic beverages beyond included tastings, and gratuities are all outside the base price. A full breakdown is included in your personalized quote.

Yes. Both are offered as optional services on the 1-week itinerary and are built into the standard 2-week itinerary. Let your Trip Coordinator know if you would like either added to a shorter trip.

Nutrition Volunteer

I had such a great experience!

Overall, I had an amazing time with this program. I love how individualize the projects were and how Jomo really invested his time into making sure you enjoyed each experience. Working with the nutritionist was a wonderful time for me and taught me many lessons that I will use as a further in my career. As well as, as the children’s home open my eyes to a whole different side of life that I have never seen before. As far as the accommodation goes, it was excellent. I enjoyed getting to know him and his guest that were staying. For the future, hopefully, there will be more volunteers than one at a time. I enjoyed the alone time because part of the reason I came on this trip was to get away from all the drama in my life back home! But for others, they might get kind of bored or lonely. All in all, I will remember this trip always and glad I had such a great experience!

Girlguiding Leader / Volunteer Vacation

A fantastic experience with memories that I will share back home and that will stay with me forever

We have had an amazing two weeks in Jamaica. It has been a full programme and a good mix of volunteering at the children’s home, plus visiting different attractions around the island. At the children’s home, I spent most of my time decorating which was hot and sweaty work, but it was very satisfying to see and hear the difference we had made. Our sightseeing days were long and busy days, but there was so much to see and do – from climbing waterfalls to swimming in the sea to visiting a plantation. Food and hotel have been good and everyone has been friendly and welcoming. Thanks for the great experience.
